My name is Jeremy William Smith. I am a Sydney based artist represented by .M Contemporary Gallery (15-19 Boundary Street Darlinghurst, Sydney). My practice is in detailed drawings and etchings with works in the State Library of NSW collection.

I am currently a PhD candidate at UNSW Art and Design. My working thesis is on ‘Narrative Cartography’ using Cartography techniques to map the LGBTQI community, in particular the changing gay male body post the introduction of PrEP (the anti-retroviral HIV drug).

My research subverts conventions of cartography to create subjective psycho-geographic maps of psychological and imagined spaces such as identity, the subconscious and sexuality.

As part of my PhD, this year I am working on a commission for the University of Sydney’s Fisher Library, for a large scale-drawing for permanent display at the library.

I graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in research at UNSW Art and Design in 2015 with a final mark of 92%. I am also a graduate of UNSW Art and Design with a Bachelor of Arts, English and Film (2011) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts First Class Honours in Drawing and Painting (2012). I have studied at Julian Ashton Art School, in drawing and painting.

I have an upcoming solo show at .M Contemporary running from the 7th - 19th of July, 2022. My first solo exhibition was titled ‘The Uncharted Land’ at ADSpace and showcased the culmination of my MFA research at UNSW Art and Design in 2015. I have exhibited internationally most recently at Design Festa Gallery in Harajuku Tokyo 2018 and in the Hong Kong Design Institute in 2013. My works have been exhibited at Bathurst Regional Gallery, Newcastle Gallery and at the Tim Olsen Drawing Prize.

In 2022 the State Library of NSW purchased two of his original artworks ‘Gay Map of Sydney’ (2019) and ‘Gay Man Map’ (2021) for their LGBTQI archive to be shown at their upcoming 2023 World Pride exhibition.

Most recently I was awarded the UNSW Top-Up Scholarship for the top ranked PhD candidate of 2022. My drawing ‘Ms. Bloomsby’ won the 2013 Tim Olsen Drawing Prize. I have also won the Caran D’Ache Prize and Gallery Barry Keldoulis Prize both in 2012. I won 2nd Prize at the annual Tropical Fruits Festival Art Exhibition in 2019.
